Certain birds exhibit a queer reaction in not returning to their home immediately on being released, but of returning there in later years. Thus some experiments in America in which golden-crowned sparrows were removed for a considerable distance from their breeding area resulted in some of the birds returning at once, whilst others did not put in an appearance until the following season. Others again, and this is more curious still, returned next season, not to the home area, but to the area in which they were released ! This latter habit was surprisingly exhibited by some white storks which were taken from Poland to Finland, 830 miles due north of their nesting area. Finland is normally well outside the range of the white stork and hence such a large and rare bird was readily noticed by many people, and it was possible to keep track of the movements of these birds
